Kaucyila Brooke is an artist based in Los Angeles and
Vienna who produces photo and text narratives for
installation and publication, photographs, critical texts
and works in video art. Her solo exhibitions include NAK,
Aachen, Germany; Kunstverein Springhornhof, Neuenkirchen,
Germany (2005) platform, Berlin (2004), Michael Dawson
Gallery, Los Angeles(2001, 2005); Art Resources Transfer,
New York(2001, 1999); and the Los Angeles Center for
Photographic Studies, Los Angeles(1997). Her ongoing
project Tit for Twat was shown at Art Resources Transfer,
New York; Shedhalle, Zurich, Switzerland(2001) and at Next
Sex: Ars Electronica 2000 as the featured installation at
the O.K. Centrum, Linz, Austria. Selections from the
photographic series "Kathy Acker's Clothes"(1998-2004) were
included in the Berlin Biennale 3 (2004) and have also been
seen in a solo exhibition at the Neuer Aachener
Kunstverein, Germany (2005) .

She edited the book Gendered Geographies, pub. Hochschule
fur Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich, (2002), her text Beaded
Curtains: The Veiled Influences of Verboten Entrances is
published with Dorit Margreiter's photographic series Two
or Three Things You Know About Me, edited by Hans Ulrich
Obrist, Mexico City/Vienna (2003) and she produced the
artist book Vitrinen in Arbeit, published by Michael Dawson
Gallery, Los Angeles (2004). Kaucyila Brooke's essays and
artist projects have appeared in Eikon: Internationale
Zeitschrift Fur Photographie & Medienkunst, Vienna,
Austria, March, 2000; The Passionate Camera, ed. Deborah
Bright, Routledge, (1998); and Reframings: New American
Feminist Photographers, ed. Diane Neumaier, Temple
University Press(1995).
Her photography and video project The Boy Mechanic (1996
ongoing) was commissioned by the Museum of Photographic
Arts in San Diego(1996) and was shown as a multi channel
video installation in the exhibition Video as a Female
Terrain at the Steirischerbst 2000, Graz, Austria and as a
single channel work installed with photographs in the
exhibition Hausordenungen at the Stadthaus, Ulm, Germany
(2002) and in a solo show at platform, Berlin, Germany
(2004). The Los Angeles Edition of The Boy Mechanic
premiered at the City of Los Angeles Artist Fellowship
Exhibition in 2005 and was subsequently exhibited with the
San Diego Edition at Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst
Leipzig (2006).
She co-produced the videotape Dry Kisses Only (1990) which
has been screened internationally. From 1998 to 2002 she
was the co-editor of the web magazine Site Street. She is
the former Director of the Program in Photography and Media
at CalArts in Los Angeles where she has been a regular
member of the faculty since 1992.
